What is modal fabric and how is it made?

Modal, also known as Modaier is a cellulose fibre made from beech trees.  This raw, natural material, cellulose, is then turned into fibre using an environmentally-friendly process, by pulping the wood fibres taken from the trees and compressing this through small holes, this is then woven to make the fabric. Modal fabric is very hard-wearing and is a popular choice as it keeps its shape and is more resistant to shrinking. In the case of our scarves, we have combined the modal fabric with mulberry silk to achieve our desired finish on the fabric.

What is mulberry silk and how is it made?

Mulberry silk is one of the finest silks available. What separates Mulberry Silk from other silks is that the raw silk fibres are only used from silkworms that have been fed Mulberry leaves. This results in the produced silk being more refined - it is pure white in colour and contains a naturally occurring protein called sericin which reduces the chances of allergic reactions - making it a hypoallergenic material.

How do you wash Mulberry silk?

It is best to wash mulberry silk using a mild detergent, nothing too harsh and allow this to air dry.

How you wash modal fabric?

It is best to wash modal fabric on a warm cycle, with a mild detergent, and allow this to air dry or use a low setting on a tumble-dryer.

With our scarves being a combination of the Mulberry silk and Modal fabric, we recommend either a maximum washing temperature of 30 degrees or dry clean, and air drying.

Are they environmentally friendly?

All materials used in our scarves are from natural sources, both the modal fabric and mulberry silk are completely bio-degradable making them a great sustainable textile for our scarves. The durability of these scarves should ensure a long life, reducing the need for replacement - saving on both wastage and money!
