Hot Home Decor Trend: Indoor Plants

Hot Home Decor Trend: Indoor Plants

9th Dec 2019

The concept of bringing the outside in is certainly not a new one and people have long looked to the natural world for inspiration when it comes to luxurious interior design decisions.

But it does seem as though this is the trend that just won’t quit right now, with house-proud folk from all over the country now spending the big bucks on indoor plants.

According to a report in the Guardian, sales of indoor plants and accessories are on the rise thanks to urbanisation and the urge to have something to care for and look after. Stats from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), for example, show that there has been a ten to 15 per cent year-on-year rise across the industry where houseplants are concerned since 2013.

And last year, RHS retail showed that houseplant sales grew by 50 per cent, largely down to foliage plant sales, which have doubled.

Instagrammer Jamie Song - who runs the Jamie’s Jungle account on the social media platform and who has 201,000 followers - explained that bringing some greenery in at home can help to provide people with a connection to nature and the earth, as well as serving as a reminder each day of how important it is to protect the environment.

“Millennials have grown up in a world that is changing dramatically. Climate change, technology, social media are all part of the rapid changes particularly affecting the newer generation.

“I believe millennials feel like they’ve inherited a world that is much worse off than for previous generations. House plants have provided millennials therefore, a refuge from the stresses caused by those things that have reshaped our world,” Mr Song went on to say.

A really lovely way to complement the houseplants you choose to bring in is to also invest in  designer wall art or wallpaper along a foliage theme. You can go as big and as bold as you like with this and it will always look impressive.

What about really being confident in your home decor choices and create a statement wall using fern-covered wallpaper, for example, and then putting a table in front of the wall with all your plants on it? This will be sure to be a talking point for whenever friends and family come to visit and you’ll love spending time in this space, tending your plants and watching them grow.

If you’d rather not put plants on a table, put them on the floor instead. This means you can have huge ferns stretching right up to the ceiling - another amazing talking point for when people come over. This is actually one of the best reasons to decorate with plants - you’re able to enjoy all sorts of versatility where scale is concerned, so you can have them anywhere in the house.
