This pop art painting is based on a real portrait of Hortense Mancini, a renowned Italian beauty who became the mistress of King Charles II. She is understood to have fled Italy in disguise as a man, to escape from her abusive husband. She was clearly a confident character who may well have raised a middle finger in person, back in the day. Artist Kirin Young has come up with many of our modern prints and canvases.
