This pastiche of an artwork by Rogier van der Weyden takes a Renaissance portrait and takes it to the spa! The original painting is called Portrait of a Young Woman and is on display in the Gemaldegalerie. It was painted in the 1430s and is celebrated for its realism and clean lines.

Not much is known about the artist himself, but he is considered highly influential to later artists because of the emotional intensity of his work and the increasing tendency towards abstract portraits as his painting evolved.

In creating this pastiche, Young & Battaglia have decided that the Young Woman needs a bit of pampering, and have treated her to a facial. The face mask has been carefully applied not to taint the lady's elaborate headdress, and cucumber slices are helping to cool and relax her eyes.

While this is clearly a very playful parody of van der Weyden's portrait, it still has the effect of making us think. What does the lady behind the face mask look like? Are they enjoying a little time out to relax, and if so, what are the causes of her stress?

Young Woman with a Facial is one of a series of pastiche artworks where classical paintings are reinvented - removing or obscuring the person in each portrait. Some have their faces hidden - like this piece and our version of the Mona Lisa. Others are made completely invisible, such as Girl Without a Pearl Earring and Military Costume without Old Man.
