What has happened here? Has there been a strange influx of oversized insects at the time of painting? Is the subject too shy to reveal their face? Or has the painter decided that he would prefer to recreate the beautiful wings of a butterfly than paint this gentleman’s visage?

The overall effect is a bit like a mask - we get a sense of the man behind, but we have to use our imaginations.
